Solar Viejo Reserva is a perfect expression of the power and depth which a Rioja wine
is capable of achieving. A blend of Tempranillo and Graciano grapes aged for 12 months in French and American
oak barrels and a long period of bottle ageing. Intensely youthful cherry red, with little colour loss, due to the high tannin levels, and the meticulous winemaking process which was applied. There are rich, ripe fruit aromas, well balanced by notes of coffee, caramel and vanilla. After a little swirl in the glass the aromas become more complex, showing black liquorice, spicy notes and hints of minerality. The palate has good structure, full of fruit and very lively, with agreeable tannin, all these elements combining to create an elegant tasty wine.
About the 2008 Vintage:
The 2008 vintage in Rioja was accorded the official designation of “Very Good” by the Regulatory Council. It was a vintage which produced a moderate yield but one of very high quality grapes.
The harvest in Rioja finished on 10th. November and delivered high quality. The weather was exceptionally favourable during the final phase of the vegetative cycle, which is always decisive in achieving good ripeness in the grapes. The vines were absolutely perfectly healthy meaning that the grapes produced were in almost perfect condition.
By the end of the process, the ideal ripeness of the grapes delivered balanced parameters of colour, acidity and potential alcohol. All these factors put together gave us a high quality vintage.
